The territory of the Municipality of Camerota covers most of the
south slope of the Monte Bulgheria massif, one of the most important
mountains in this portion of Cilento, and stretches as far as
the Thyrrenian coast. From a geological point of view, the outcropping
rock succession forms part of the series of Mount Bulgheria, which
embodies the transition between the carbonate series and the Flysch
of Cilento series. The Mount Bulgheria series includes deposits
with age ranging from the Triassic to the Miocene epochs (the
latter are present in marginal areas).

Dolomites from the Upper Triassic era are visible in small upthrows
around Cala Bianca and to the West of Marina di Camerota, while
limestone and calcarenite rock exposures from the Lower Liassic
(south of the Camerota parallel) and Middle Liassic periods (to
the north) are more extensive. Marls dating back to the Upper
Liassic time are visible in the immediate surroundings of Licusati,
whereas the southern slopes of Mount Bulgheria are made up of
calcirudites and calcaren ites from the Upper-Middle Jurassic
and Cretaceous eras.
In the area of Camerota there are only few Cenozoic exposures,
while Quaternary exposures are of great interest. Lacustrine sediments
in the area of Licusati include mainly Calabrian sediments, which,
also owing to tectonic facts, are today found at 400 metres above
sea level. The most recent beach deposits, probably referable
to the Thyrrenian and Versilian time, are found at altitudes of
2 and 8 metres.
From a tectonic point of view, an over thrust in the northern
area brings the unit of Mount Bulgheria over the Flysch of Cilento,
the situation being exactly the opposite in the western area.
Fault systems have an E-W and N-S orientation.
The attitude of strata generally ranges from horizontal to slightly
slanting to the North. It should be noted that in some deeply
breached areas, especially along the coast, the attitude of strata
is not easy to make out at all.
