A considerable number of marine, underwater
and land caves are found in the territory of the Municipality
of Camerota. Many of them are concentrated in areas of remarkable
environmental interest that offer extraordinary, suggestive settings
full of history and beauty.
The aim of the Project, of which this work is part, was the re-evaluation
and protection of the local subterranean heritage. The uniqueness
and scientific as well as cultural importance of such heritage
allowed for the activation of a process for "compatible" tourism,
which meant not only opening sites to visitors, but also involving
the whole territory at different levels and promoting high value
scientific as well as educational activities.
Consequently, we have tried to offer visitors to the Park a richer
cultural package by making scientific findings on local geology,
archaeology and marine biology available to the wider public.
We have also tried to set the promotion of local natural resources
within a single, integrated framework aimed at setting in motion
business initiatives on the one hand and educational as well as
informational activities on the other, in an attempt to raise
the expectations of local young people.
This will provide a great boost to reception and accommodation
activities and to activities aimed at promoting the Park's environmental
resources broadly speaking.
